'What's the most common word you use while talking to yourself or your peers?' asked my friend Anuj Sharma a few months ago while we were having a discussion about the life spheres of an engineering undergraduate.
I remembered responding with a giggle, "Anuj, maybe I could tell you the word that I used to utter while talking to my peers, but it's almost impossible to process the emotions and tons of thoughts I used to discuss with myself. At that point in time, I focused on what the thought was rather than picking up words to utter to myself."
He said, "I asked this on purpose because people's thoughts and decisions are in their most pure form when they are discussing or solving a certain issue with themselves. They do not care to pick their words to showcase their vocabulary or add garnish. Rather, the word they pick is the most fundamental and straight to the point. And somehow, if you manage to select that specific word, you will get to know the exact summary of your mind. In my understanding, I see this as the most fundamental and necessary daily exercise to reflect upon."
His words touched me, and I adopted this practice into my daily routine. It was the third week of April, and after 4-5 days of this exercise, I came to the conclusion that the specific word in my head at that time was 'insecurity.'
With this pandemic, I observed the drive among my peers to earn e-certificates in various fields, do internships, take courses, and more. Whereas, in the first month of lockdown, I was busy learning cooking and engaging in other non-conventional activities that I enjoyed. But every time I scrolled through LinkedIn, I felt insecure and pressured, questioning if I was not doing what I should be doing.
Over time, Anuj Sharma and his perspectives helped me find my direction, and I kept pursuing what interests me rather than following the conventional approach that I previously thought was the only way to grow.
My team and I came up with a vision to contribute something to society that improves lifestyles and helps us grow as well. Now, when I do the exercise of finding that specific word, I see it as 'Vision.'
