Capturing my thrifty escapade in Kasol with a ₹5k-6k itinerary, embarking on the mesmerizing Kheer-Ganga Trek alongside my old-school buddies, immersing in the enchanting beauty of Himachal's landscapes. No ordinary adventurers, Lmao!
Finally after lot of discussion, change of plans, convincing & stubbornness, I with my 3 friends Aagrah, Anuj & Prateek were going for our first ever Road Trip from Agra District to Kullu District (Particularly Parvati Valley i.e. Kasol). Without going too much in planning story (Some another day), let me take you to the trip itself only.
We were in our last year of being teens, in 1st year of our majors, basically what I mean to say is "we had not much money to spare". So it was a budget friendly ₹5k-6k trip of 5D/4N including travel time.
Let me take you through the itinerary of this super budget friendly trip -
Day 1
Embarking on an unforgettable 5-day escapade from our hometown Agra in Noon 2PM, we set our sights on Kasol, hiring a taxi for the journey. Surprisingly, this option proved to be as economical as combining the costs of a Volvo bus and local travel for four people but with more convenience.
It was a Tata Tiago costing ₹8/km + Toll + Driver (Rough Approximation to ₹9.5/km) sharing the expenses equitably among four of us (1700 KM, ₹16k, ₹4k per person). Added Advantage being - we can stop for the scenes in the midway.
Our excitement soared as we hit the road on Day 1, commencing an exhilarating adventure with boundless joy and laughter. Each one us had our food packed from our home for the Day 1 - Typical UP Travel fool i.e. Puri-Aaloo & Aachar.
The beginning was feeling like no less than ZNMD Vibe !
Extra Pointers: Our Driver was a man in his 40s, hailing from rural background with a habit of hell lot of smoking beedis. It (Not him but smell of the beedi) irritated us all the way, later we found out it's not only beedi but Ganja, Only we know how thrilling was his driving on mountains. Didn't expect to return home in single piece. Lol!
Day 2
We arrived at Kasol Outskirts around noon, only to find that our originally booked dorm was already occupied by other guests, which was disappointing. However, I immediately raised a complaint with Booking.com, where we made the reservation. Thankfully, they upgraded us to a different hotel called SIM SIM at the same price, and to our delight, it turned out to be an incredible upgrade. From a dorm bed, we now had two rooms with a breathtaking view of the river.
One of the unique aspects of hotels in Kasol is that they offer mini treks within the premises. We embarked on a 20-minute trek to reach our hotel (Sim Sim), costing us around ₹250 per person for the two rooms. For those seeking a more authentic traveler experience, booking riverside camps can provide the perfect ambiance.
After a short rest, we set out on the Chalal Trek, exploring nearby unnamed places and admiring the stunning Parvati Valley from Kasol Outskirts. The local food in the area was simply delicious, especially the Thukpa and Rice Beer. Known as the Israel of India, Kasol also offers easy access to herbal products for those interested.
Despite the initial setback, our stay in Kasol turned out to be an unforgettable experience, filled with adventure, delicious food, and captivating views.
Post that we relaxed full night at our stay to begin our Trek to Kheerganga the very next day.
Day 3
To embrace a tranquil morning amidst the mountains, we set off at 6 AM from our cozy hotel, SIM-SIM, avoiding the bustling rush on the narrow mountain roads.
Our first destination was Manikaran, a serene place blessed with captivating geological wonders and both cold and hot springs in one location. Here, at the Gurudwara of Manikaran, we relished a delightful Langar breakfast before embarking on our much-anticipated journey to Kheerganga.
As we continued our ascent, the roads above Manikaran posed a daunting challenge. Although our driver claimed to be at ease driving our taxi, we couldn't help but have second thoughts after noticing his relaxed demeanor post a drag of ganja, leading to some amusing doubts (lol).
Prioritizing safety above all, we made the prudent decision to take a bus from Manikaran to Barshaini, where our exciting trek to Kheerganga would commence. The bus fare, a mere ₹40 per person, turned out to be the gateway to an adrenaline-pumping and unforgettable ride. Braving the window seat, our hearts raced as we clung to our seats, feeling the thrill of life just inches away from a wild edge. Only the brave souls among us managed to keep their eyes open throughout this daring adventure.
The moment we reached the bustling bus stand, excitement coursed through our veins as we readied ourselves for the epic trek ahead. We were presented with two enticing options:
(a) The Kalga Jungle, a route that promised a true adventure.
(b) The Barshaini Village, leading to the enchanting Kheerganga Camping Site.
Being adventure enthusiasts, we knew the Kalga route was calling our names—a journey of 5 hours through a mystical jungle, brimming with thrilling pathways and mini adventures at every twist and turn.
But that wasn't the only tip we received. For those who wanted to savor a sip of whisky at the summit, the guide wisely advised to grab a bottle before embarking on the trek, either from the city or at the last possible point in Barshaini. Armed with this valuable piece of information, we prepared ourselves for an unforgettable journey. (We were a group of sober guys, so didn't able to make most of the tip)
Ascending through the dense foliage of Kalga Jungle, the air filled with a sense of wonder and the thrill of exploration. Every step forward revealed something new—a hidden waterfall, a majestic old tree, or a breathtaking view of the valley below. Time seemed to slow down, allowing us to immerse ourselves fully in the beauty of nature.
Finally, after an adrenaline-filled ascent, we reached the majestic Kheerganga summit. The feeling of accomplishment mixed with awe as we gazed at the breathtaking panorama of the mountains surrounding us. We couldn't wait to settle into our Quad Sharing Camp, priced at a reasonable ₹400 per person, where we could rest our weary legs and soak in the camaraderie of fellow trekkers. It started raining as soon as we reached the camp around 6PM.
I am short of words to describe the night under open sky in the tent, no less than a dream come true at that point of time in our teens.
The camp turned out to be a haven of delightful gatherings, laughter, and stories around the bonfire. We realized that this trek was not just a physical journey—it was a soul-stirring experience that would forever remain etched in our hearts. Kheerganga had charmed us with its enchanting trails, rewarding us with memories and friendships that would last a lifetime.
Extra Pointers: In this enigmatic tale, we found ourselves pondering whether it was sheer luck or something more at play. Despite booking a simple ₹400 per person camp, we were in for an unexpected surprise—a lavish feast at night. The reason behind this unexpected indulgence remained a mystery—perhaps someone threw a party, or the camp manager simply overlooked our no food plan. Regardless, it turned out to be a full-fledged treat that left us delighted.
As if the universe was intent on spoiling us, the pleasant surprises continued. The following morning brought yet another delightful twist—a complimentary breakfast. It felt like a stroke of good fortune was guiding our journey. The charm of Kheerganga's ambiance seemed to weave magic around us, making every moment truly extraordinary. The untold story of our adventure will forever remain etched in our hearts, a captivating blend of luck, mystery, and unforgettable memories.
Day 4
Following an incredible night in the camp, the next morning found us at the soothing Hotspring of Kheerganga, seeking respite from the chilling 3-4℃ weather. The hotspring felt like pure heaven, rejuvenating us and banishing all traces of laziness. After this blissful experience, we commenced our trek downhill, exploring Rudranag and Barsheini on our way before finally setting off for Agra in the evening. Our weary legs cried out to us, begging for respite after the challenging 13Km uphill and 13Km downhill trek.
Extra Pointers: Last evening, we visited the hot spring but refrained from taking a bath due to the late hour. However, the next early morning, the experience was truly mind-boggling—nothing short of heavenly. Unfortunately, Careless Prateek (one of our group) accidentally stepped on my spectacles (with a -4D power), shattering them into pieces. Although I concealed my anger, the trip afterward seemed a bit blurred. Thankfully, Aagrah had spare spectacles close to -3D power, bringing some relief to my eyes.
Day 5
We left from Kasol last evening and finally reached home the next day noon and the memorable 4 Days get embedded in my memories for life.
Total Expenses Per person -
Travel ₹4k , Stay (1 Night in Hotel/Dorm + 1 Night in Camp) = ₹650, Food & Miscellaneous = ₹1200
Net ~ ₹6k per person
Meanwhile, we purchased crates of famous Himachali fruits in the way to keep our parents happy.
Happy Travel, incase you are planning !
